The Let It Snow Wall Hanging is the perfect design to bring the coziness and beauty of winter into your home. Enjoy working up this free crochet pattern and displaying it in your home all winter season long!

If you love decorating for winter, but don’t want to go into full holiday mode, the Let It Snow Wall Hanging will check the boxes. It’s not specifically holiday themed, but is perfect for general winter vibes. It can be festive to add to your holiday decorating, but the snowflakes and the color combination are perfect for the whole winter season!
The Let It Snow Wall Hanging is worked flat in back and forth rows of single crochet stitches, following a graph featuring pretty snowflakes and bold lettering. You’ll finish by crocheting the flat panel to a dowel and then making a long chain for hanging. Finally, the fringe was added at the end.
For this crochet project, any worsted-weight cotton or acrylic yarn can be used. The wall hanging pictured it worked up WeCrochet Comfy Worsted yarn. This yarn is a cotton and acrylic blend that gave the perfect texture for the Let It Snow Wall Hanging. There are so many beautiful shades to choose from. Browse them here!

This wall hanging makes a beautiful piece for your own home or a thoughtful handmade gift for someone special.
Now, if wall hangings aren’t your thing, the Let It Snow Wall Hanging also makes a great throw pillow! You’d just need to work up a second panel the same size as the first one (in a solid color, or following the graph again) and then crochet them together, adding stuffing in the middle.

Materials:
- Worsted weight #4 yarn – The wall-hanging pictured in this pattern was made with WeCrochet/Knit Picks Comfy yarn which is 75% cotton and 25% acrylic. Either cotton or acrylic yarn (or a blend) can be used for this project. This yarn is a little on the thinner side for a worsted-weight yarn. If you are substituting with another yarn, please refer to the gauge as your wall hanging may turn out larger or smaller, depending on yarn thickness. A total of approximately 300 yds will be needed for this project. The colorways and yardages used are about 230 yds of White (includes yardage for fringe), 20 yds of Sea Foam (light blue/green), 25 yds of Marlin (darker blue/teal), and 25 yds of Whisker (gray), 40 yds of Zinnia (pink), and 5 yds of White.
- Crochet Hook – 4 mm size crochet hook
- Wooden Dowel (or similar material) – a 5/16” thick dowel was used for the wall hanging pictured. The dowel was cut to approx. 1-1.5 inches wider than the panel. You can also use a pre-cut 16” or 18” dowel and trim it down a touch or leave it slightly long on the sides.
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends.
- Scissors for cutting ends.
Stitches Used:
- Ch – Chain
- Sl St – Slip stitch
- SC – Single crochet
Gauge
- 2” square = approximately 11 rows of 9 SC stitches.
Finished Size:
- When finished, the wall hanging panel (just the rectangular crocheted piece) measures approximately 13.75” wide x 16” tall. This panel was blocked to make it even on all sides and flat. Finished measurements from top of dowel to bottom of fringe is 14” wide x 19.5” tall.
Important Notes:
- Turned Rows– Each panel is worked in turned rows of SC stitches. At the end of each row, chain 1 and turn.
- Color Changes – You will be changing colors often in this pattern. To change colors, complete the last SC in the first color up until the last yarn over. Yarn over with the new color and pull through last step of the SC stitch. So, your SC will go like this: insert hook into last stitch of the first color, pull up a loop, yarn over with new color, pull through all loops on hook. Now you will be working in the new color until you change colors again.
- Intarsia Crochet Tips – For this project, you will be using the intarsia crochet technique. When you change colors, you will not be carrying the unused colors along under your stitches. Instead, you will be dropping the color that you are finished with (leaving it attached) and picking up the next color, pulling it over to where you are working the stitches. There will be a right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) of this project. A further explanation on this is in the Graph Notes below.
- Video Tutorial – There is not a specific video tutorial for this pattern, however, to see how a similar wall hanging project is worked up, please see the video tutorial on my YouTube Channel HERE. This video provides more explanation and visuals on how to read a graph, work color changes, pick up and drop yarn, and attaching the dowel for hanging.
Graph Instructions
Below, you will see the graph for this project. Each box in the graph counts as one SC stitch. This means you will be working 86 rows of 65 stitches, following the color changes in the graph.
To read this graph, you will be starting at the bottom right and working your way across in back-and-forth rows. All ODD numbered rows will have the right side of the project facing you, EVEN numbered rows will have the wrong side facing you. When you are working on the right side (RS) or even numbered rows, make sure you are dropping the yarn to the back (away from you) for the color changes. When you are working on a wrong side (WS) row (odd numbered rows), make sure you are dropping the yarn on the front (towards you) for the color changes. This will ensure that the front of the wall hanging does not show any of the color changes since all the yarn is dropped and noticed the back (wrong side).
On the wrong side, you will start to see where you drop and pick up each color, pulling it over to where you need it. Yes, it will be messy looking with all the ends and yarn carried across, but it is the back so you will not see it once it is hanging on the wall.
To help keep your yarn floats across the back of your project shorter, it is helpful to use two bobbins of some colors, when the sections of the same color are far apart. For example, for the two lighter blue snowflakes in rows 66-80, two bobbins of the light blue were used, one for each snowflake so that the yarn didn’t have to be floated back and forth across the whole back of the project. As an alternative, you can also carry your yarn under your stitches at times when the colors are further apart to reduce the length of the floated yarn on the back. If you are carrying yarn, be sure to keep it towards the back of the project and bottom of the stitches so the carried color will not show through between your stitches when looking at the front of your project.
Remember to keep consistent tension, even when working all the color changes. This is so your panel comes out nice and even on the sides. However, if it is a little off at the end, blocking it will even it out.

The Pattern
Row 1: Start with a chain of 66 in color A. SC in 2nd ch from hook and in each stitch across, ch 1 turn (65) *This first row counts as row 1 on the graph.
Rows 2-86: SC in each st across, ch 1, turn (65). Follow written instructions for the color changes below (rows 2-86) or follow the graph.
After row 86, do not fasten off. Continue to the instructions for attaching your project to the dowel for hanging.
Written Instructions for the Graph
You may choose to either use the written notes below for the color changes or follow the graph. In the written notes below, the row number, number of SC stitches in each color, RS/WS rows, and the direction you are traveling (relating to the graph) are included.
Color Key (WeCrochet Colorway titles)
A = White (White)
B = Dark Teal (Marlin)

After row 86, do not fasten off. Continue to next set of instructions below to attach your panel to the dowel.

Attaching to the Dowel and Adding the Chain for Hanging
After completing row 86 (including the chain 1 at the end of the round), turn your work so the right side (RS) is facing you. Line up your dowel along the top of your project. Now, you will work one last row of single crochet stitches, however, you will be working these stitches over the dowel. To make your SC stitches, insert your hook into the stitch, passing under the dowel. Yarn over on the other side of the dowel and pull up a loop (up to the top of the dowel), yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Continue working SC stitches all the way across (65 sts in total). When you get to the other end, do not fasten off. Next, you’ll be making the long chain for hanging your project.
For a visual on attaching the dowel and adding the chain, see this video tutorial from another one of our wall hanging patterns. The steps are the same. There are also helpful photos below.

To add the chain for hanging, chain 70 (or your desired length for the hanging chain), join with a slip stitch to the top of the first SC stitch on the other end of the dowel. Fasten off. Weave in all ends on the back of the project.

Adding the Knotted Fringe
For the knotted fringe, you will need a bunch of strands of white (or your chosen fringe color) cut into approximately 9 inches each. Wrapping your yarn around an object like a book and then cutting the ends is an easy way to keep the strands even in length. Take one strand, fold it in half, and pull it part way through one of the stitches on the bottom of the wall hanging. Loop the ends through the loop created and pull down on the ends to secure the knot (see photos below. Repeat for all 65 stitches across bottom of wall hanging.
When you have added all the strands of fringe and knotted them, trim the strands evenly to your desired length. It might be helpful to block your project before trimming the strands if they are not sitting quite flat. For the wall hanging pictured, the fringe was trimmed to approximately 2.75” in length.

That’s all! You are now finished your Let It Snow Wall Hanging! I hope you had so much fun working up this design! Now, enjoy finding the perfect place to display your beautiful work!
