I’m so excited to kick off week 1 of this year’s Christmas in July event with this festive Christmas Tree Basket! This fun and functional basket is perfect for adding a little holiday cheer to your home while keeping small items neatly organized.

Whether you use it to hold wrapped treats, holiday décor, small gifts, craft supplies, or Christmas cards, this basket is as practical as it is festive. The simple tree design adds a cheerful holiday touch, making it a fun decoration throughout the Christmas season.

This basket is worked in the round from the bottom up using single crochet stitches with a few color changes, making it an enjoyable project for confident beginners and experienced crocheters alike. It also works up fairly quickly, so you’ll have plenty of time to make one for yourself—and maybe a few more for handmade holiday gifts!

Materials

  • #5 Bulky weight yarnBernat Maker Minis were used for this Christmas tree basket in the white, red, and green colors. Approximately 70 yds was used in total, which breaks down to roughly 35 yds in red, 30 yds in white, and 5 yds in green. Another bulky weight yarn can be substituted in this project or doubled strands of a lighter weight yarn. When substituting, be sure to check the gauge information to make sure your basket turns out the size expected.
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook – using this smaller hook size with the bulky weight yarn creates tighter stitches, giving the basket more structure. A tighter tension was also used. If you crochet with a looser tension, I’d recommend going down a hook size.
  • Yarn needle to weave in ends (bent yarn needles are the handy)
  • Scissors for cutting yarn (these little ones are my favorite!)

Stitches Used

  • Ch – chain
  • Sl St – slip stitch
  • SC – single crochet
  • BLO SC – single crochet in the back loops only

Gauge

  • The gauge is not that important for this project, however, for this basket, there are approx. 8 rows of 8 SC stitches in 2”square.

Finished Size

  • The basket pictured is 4.5” tall. The base measures 4.5” in diameter.

Important Notes

  • Magic Circle – This pattern begins with a magic circle. Make a circle with your yarn, insert crochet hook into circle and draw up a loop. Use this loop to start your first chains of the pattern. A magic circle tutorial is on our YouTube Channel. The chain 2 method can also be used to start this project.
  • Joined Rounds – This basket is worked in joined rounds. At the end of each round, you will be joining the last stitch of the round to the first stitch with a slip stitch and then chaining 1 before starting the stitches of the next round. Start the first stitch of the next round in the same stitch as the join and chain 1.
  • Tapestry Crochet Tips – The body of this basket is worked in tapestry crochet following a graph. You will find the graph and the written instructions for the graph further in the pattern. For this pattern, you will be carrying the inactive yarn colors behind the active yarn you are using. Working in the back loops only helps hide the carried yarn. Try to keep your tension a little on the tighter side and the carried yarn behind and towards the bottom of your stitches to keep it more hidden.
  • Color Changes – Since you will be working the body of the basket in tapestry crochet, you will be changing colors often and carrying the colors you are not using along with you under your stitches. To change colors, complete the last single crochet stitch in the first color up until the last yarn over. Yarn over with the new color and pull through last step of the single crochet stitch. So, your SC will go like this: insert hook into last stitch in the first color, pull up a loop, yarn over with the new color, pull through all loops on hook. Now you will be working in the new color until you change colors again.

Basket Height

The next rounds for this basket are worked in the back loops only (BLO). The round count will start at 1 again so the round numbers match up with the row numbers on the graph. Each round is worked in BLO SC with a join and ch 1 at the end of each round. After round 14, continue to instructions for the top of the basket.

Follow either the written instructions or the graph below for the color changes.

Written Instructions

For the instructions below, please note that r = red, w = white, and g = green.

Graph Notes

  • Each box represents one BLO SC stitch.
  • Sl st join and chain 1 after each row.
  • Inactive yarn colors are carried along with you under your stitches.
  • The graph is 15 stitches wide; however, the basket is 60 stitches around. The graph will need to be repeated for a total of 4 times for the 60 stitches around the basket.
  • To read the graph, start at the bottom right and move from right to left, bottom to top (left to right if you are left-handed).
  • After row 14 of the graph, continue to the top of basket instructions.

Top of Basket

In the next two rounds, the basket handles will be worked. If you don’t want your basket to have handles, you can just work a round of SC instead and skip the chain stitches for the handles. Working a last round in front post single crochet stitches or crab stitches (reverse SC) would also give your basket a nice finished edge, if desired.

Round 15: In the back loops only, SC in first 2 sts, ch 12, skip next 10 sts, SC in next 20 sts, ch 12, skip next 10 sts, SC in last 18 sts, join, ch 1. (60 SC sts and 24 chs = 74 stitches total)

Round 16: In the back loops only, SC in each st around including in each of the chain stitches forming the handles, join. (74)

Fasten off. Weave in all ends and cut yarn.
