Cute Kitty Beanie

My two little girls love kitties and anything cat related, so this inspired me to create this cute kitty hat for them! I made it in a few different color combinations and couldn’t decide which was my favorite so I took a picture of all 3! The possibilities are endless! Which colors will you choose?

My daughters claimed these hats as soon as they were finished!

This pattern comes in 6-12 months, toddler, preschooler, child, and teen/adult sizes.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn – I mostly used Red Heart yarn, and some Caron Simply Soft in various colors, depending on which hat you are looking at. You will need a main color, an accent color, black for the whiskers and pupils, and white for the eyes (only if you don’t use the accent color for the eyes too).
  • 5.0mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Stitches Used:

  • Ch – chain
  • Sl St – slip stitch
  • SC – single crochet
  • DC – double crochet
  • SC DEC – single crochet decrease (same as single crochet 2 together)

Gauge:

1” = 4 DC Stitches

1” = 2.5 rows of DC

Important Notes:

  • Magic Circle – Make a circle with your yarn, insert crochet hook into circle and draw up a loop. Use this loop to start your first chain 2 of the pattern. If you are unsure of how to make a magic circle, check out my Magic Circle Video Tutorial.
  • Joining – at the end of each round, be sure to join with your slip stitch to the top of the first double crochet stitch of the round, instead of in the chain 2 space. This will create a more hidden seam.
  • Starting each round– start each round in the same stitch as the chain 2. Do not skip to the next stitch. For example, at the end of round 1, join to the top of the first double crochet, chain 2, and then start the next 2 double crochet stitches of round 2 in the same stitch as the chain 2.
  • I crochet a little on the tighter side. If you are a loose crocheter, you may need to change your hook size to get the desired size.

EARS

Make 4 ears in total – 2 in main hat colour, and 2 in accent color.

Row 1: Chain 7, SC in 2nd chain from hook, SC in each stitch, ch 1, turn (6)

Row 2: SC DEC, SC in next 2, SC DEC, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 3: SC in each stitch, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 4: SC DEC, DC DEC, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 5: SC in each stitch, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 6: SC DEC, ch 1, turn, continue to SC around entire ear (work 2 SC in each of the corners to prevent them from curling), fasten off with a slip stitch in the first SC and weave in ends.

Weave in ends on the ears before attaching them together.

Place a purple ear and a pink ear together (or whichever colours you chose to work with), matching up the stitches, and single crochet along the edge to join the together (with purple). Make sure you pick which side of the inner ear you want to be facing out before you join them!

How to crochet the ears together: Start by inserting your hook through a stitch on inner and outer ear, pulling through a loop of your main colour (purple), and continuing to single crochet into the next stitch and each stitch along the edge of the ear. Join to first SC, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto the hat.

Sew the ears onto the hat where it naturally folds when laying flat. My ears line up with rows 4,5,6 on the hat.

NOSE

Row 1: Ch 5, SC in 2nd chain from hook, SC in each stitch, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 2: SC DEC, SC DEC, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 3: SC DEC, ch 1, turn, then continue to SC around outside edge, work 2 SC stitches into each corner, join to first SC with a slip stitch, fasten off leaving a long tail to attach to hat.

After the nose is attached to the hat, use your yarn needle to make the cat’s mouth and whiskers.

EYES

Round 1: Magic Circle (click here if you need help), chain 1, 8 SC inside circle, join to first SC with a slip stitch, ch 1 (8)

Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join to first SC, ch 1 (16)

Round 3: SC in first 4 stitches, HDC, DC, DC, HDC, SC in next 4, HDC, DC, DC, HDC, join to first SC, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew on to hat (16)

EYES (pupils)

For the pupils, I used a 4.0mm (G6) hook so the stitches would be a bit tighter. This way I didn’t really have gaps between the stitches and the background eye colour showing through.

Chain 6, slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook, SC in next, HDC in next, SC, slip stitch in last, ch 1. Next, working on the other side of the chain, slip stitch into first stitch, SC in next, HDC, SC, slip stitch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew onto the eye.

After fastening off, using my yarn needle, I ran the black yarn up and down through the gaps in the middle of the chain stitches to fill in any “holes” that may show white through from the eyes. Then I continued to sew the pupils onto the eyes.

Use your yarn needle to sew the pupils onto the eyes before sewing the eyes onto the hat.

WHISKERS

After sewing on ears, eyes, and nose, use your yarn needle to sew on the whiskers.  I used a sewing back stitch technique for sewing on my whiskers.

You are all finished! I hope you love the Kitty Hat you just made!

And one more picture of the hat being loved….
