I made these football hats for my best friend that is expecting twins! Her husband is very into football and is a huge Calgary Stampeders fan, so I thought it would be fun to make the hats in Stampeder colors, rather than brown and white like an actual football. They are having a boy and a girl, so I used sparkle white yarn and a flower to one of the hats to make it more feminine for the baby girl.
For the hat pattern, I used THIS HAT PATTERN by Repeat Crafter Me, but instead of using bumblebee colors, I used red, white, and black to match Stampeder colors. To make the flower for the girl’s hat, I used THIS LAYERED FLOWER MOTIF PATTERN, but I only did the first layer (rounds 1 and 2).
You can use any worsted weight yarn for this pattern. I used Bernat Satin Yarn in Crimson and Red Heart Soft Yarn in Black. For the girl’s hat, I used Caron Simply Soft Party Yarn in Snow. For the boy, I used Red Heart Soft Yarn in White.
I made the 0-3 Month size hat and changed colors like this:
Rows 1-2: Red
Row 3: Black
Row 4: White
Rows 5-8: Red
Row 9 – White
Row 10: Black
Row 11: Red
Then I used white yarn to stitch the laces onto the hat in the middle of the red section.
If you are making a hat in a bigger size, you can add another row or two of red at the top, in the middle, and/or at the bottom to get the number of rows you need.
I gave these hats as part of the baby shower gift, and they were a huge hit!
